# In-Store

Accept payments in person with card terminals, connected to your cash register or on their own.

This section covers everything you need to accept payments in person: choosing a terminal, setting it up, configuring it, using it day to day and connecting it to your cash register.

#### Before you start

Two things must be in place before your first in-store payment:

* A **contract** with {inject-platform-name} or with your acquirer. You don't need to add acquirer contracts in the portal: when you create a terminal, {inject-platform-name} sends the activation request to your acquirers automatically.
* A configured **processor and connector** for each payment method you want to accept. See steps 2 and 3 in [Set up your terminal](/documentation/payments/in-store-payments/set-up-terminals.md).

#### Choosing your approach

{% tabs %}
{% tab title="Standalone terminal" %}
You enter the amount directly on the terminal. [Set up your terminal](/documentation/payments/in-store-payments/set-up-terminals.md) and see [Using the terminal](/documentation/payments/in-store-payments/using-the-terminal.md) for daily use.
{% endtab %}

{% tab title="Connected to my cash register" %}
Your cash register sends the amount to the terminal, so staff don't have to type it twice. Set up the terminal as usual, then connect it through one of the [Integrations](/documentation/payments/in-store-payments/integrations.md).
{% endtab %}

{% tab title="Unattended" %}
For vending machines, kiosks, parking or EV charging, where no staff are present. In your [Terminal Configuration](/documentation/payments/in-store-payments/terminal-configuration.md), enable **API Access** and set **Personnel's Attendance** to **Unattended**. Tipping isn't available on unattended terminals.
{% endtab %}

{% tab title="Phone as terminal" %}
With [SoftPOS on Android](/documentation/payments/in-store-payments/softpos-on-android.md), an Android phone accepts contactless card payments, with no extra hardware needed.
{% endtab %}
{% endtabs %}

{% hint style="info" %}
Your terminals update automatically during the **maintenance window** you set in the terminal configuration, so they always run the latest software and security updates.
{% endhint %}

#### Accepting payments online as well?

Online and in-store payments run in the same space, so all transactions appear in one list and one settlement. See [Online](/documentation/payments/integrations.md) for checkout integrations, plugins and payment links.
