# Set up your terminal

Set up your terminal in the {inject-platform-name} portal and activate the device to start accepting in-store payments.

Before you can accept in-store payments, you set up your terminal in the {inject-platform-name} portal and then activate the device. The steps build on each other, so follow them in this order:

1. **Create a location:** where the terminal is used
2. **Configure processors:** which acquirers process your payments
3. **Create a terminal configuration:** the settings your terminals use
4. **Create the terminal:** links the device to a location and a configuration
5. **Wait for acquirer activation:** your acquirers activate the terminal
6. **Activate the device:** connect the physical terminal to your account

{% hint style="info" %}
**Before you start:** You need a terminal device (see Terminal Line-Up) and a contract with {inject-platform-name} or your acquirer.
{% endhint %}

### Step 1: Create a location

Every terminal belongs to a location. New accounts don't have a location yet, so you need to create one first.

1. Go to **Space → Terminals → Locations**.
2. Click **Create terminal location**.
3. Fill out the form:
   * **Name:** a name to recognize the location, for example "Bern Store"
   * **Address:** given name, family name, organization name, street, country, postcode, city and email address are required. Salutation, sorting code and phone numbers are optional.
   * **Contact Person Address:** tick this box if the person responsible for the location has a different address from the location itself.
4. Click **Create**.

{% hint style="warning" %}
The address and contact details must be **exactly the same** as in your contract with {inject-platform-name} or your acquirer. If they don't match, the acquirer can't activate your terminal.
{% endhint %}

### Step 2: Configure processors

Processors connect your terminal to your acquirers. You need to configure them before you can create a terminal configuration.

1. Go to **Settings** in your **space** (not your account).
2. On the **Main** tab, open **Processors**.
3. Click **Configure processor** in the top right.
4. Choose your acquirer. You'll then see a page for each card brand you use with that acquirer, one after another. On each page, click **Configure** in the top right. You can leave all settings as they are.
5. Repeat this for each acquirer you have a contract with.

The processors you can choose depend on your {inject-platform-name} subscription.

### Step 3: Create a terminal configuration

A terminal configuration holds all the settings for your terminals, such as which payment methods they accept, receipts, tips and maintenance times.

{% hint style="info" %}
**One configuration, many terminals:** You can use the same configuration for several terminals. Any change to the configuration applies to every terminal that uses it, so you only need to set things up once.
{% endhint %}

1. Go to **Space → Terminals → Configurations** and create a new configuration.
2. Enter a **Name** and check the **Time Zone**.
3. Set the **Maintenance Window**: the time when the terminal installs updates, restarts and sends its final balance.
4. Under **Connectors**, select the **Connector Configurations** for the payment methods your terminal should accept. Only connectors from the processors you configured in step 2 appear here.
5. Save the configuration.

All other settings are optional and can be changed at any time. See Terminal Configuration for a description of every setting.

### Step 4: Create the terminal

1. Go to **Space → Terminals → Terminals** and click **Create terminal**.
2. Select **Physical Terminal** and click **Set up terminal**.
3. Fill out the form:
   * **Name:** a name to recognize the terminal, for example "Checkout 1"
   * **Location:** the location from step 1
   * **Configuration:** the configuration from step 3
   * **Terminal Environment:** **Production** for real payments, or **Test** for test transactions
4. Click **Create**.

{% hint style="info" %}
The terminal device must be set up for the environment you choose. If you're unsure, keep **Production**.
{% endhint %}

### Step 5: Wait for acquirer activation

After you create the terminal, {inject-platform-name} automatically sends its details to the acquirers in your configuration. Each acquirer then activates the terminal on their side.

{% hint style="warning" %}
Activation is done by your acquirer, not by {inject-platform-name}, and usually takes **1–3 business days**.
{% endhint %}

To check the status, open your terminal under **Space → Terminals → Terminals**. The **Acquirers** section lists each acquirer and its state. Click **Refresh** to update it.

### Step 6: Activate the device

As soon as **at least one acquirer** is active, an **Activation Code** appears in the **Terminal Device** section of your terminal's page. There's no activation code before that.

1. **Unbox** the device and check that all accessories are included.
2. **Power on** the terminal and wait for it to start.
3. **Connect it to the internet:**
   * **Wi-Fi:** follow the on-screen setup.
   * **4G:** on terminals with a SIM card, the SIM is pre-installed. Make sure mobile data is enabled.
4. **Enter the activation code** from the portal when the terminal asks for it.
5. The terminal links itself to your account and downloads its configuration.
6. Run a **small test transaction** to check that everything works.

Your terminal's page also shows its **Terminal ID** and **Merchant ID**. Keep them handy, since you may need them when contacting support or your acquirer.
